Give Your Skin a (Spring) Break

In a world where we're inundated with advertisements for daily serums, night creams, and powerful astringents loaded with beauty ingredients: ceramides and peptides, antioxidants and antimicrobials, exfoliating enzymes, epidermal growth factor, stem cells, and squalene oil. Pre-, pro-, and post-biotics, plus a pore-clearing cleanser that balances my pH level. Collagen, of course, and hydrating humectants: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid. Finally, a face oil—one that’s biocompatible and full of essential fatty acids…all that make you want to scream:  GIVE ME A BREAK!

It's tempting to think that more is always better when it comes to skincare. However, this season I would like to invite you to try a minimalist approach called "skincare fasting." Just as your body may benefit from an occasional detox, your skin could flourish with a break from the complexity of extensive routines. Skincare fasting, also regarded as a "skin detox," strips your regimen down to the bare essentials, allowing your skin's natural regulatory processes to take charge.

The Philosophy Behind Skincare Fasting

The principle of skincare fasting lies in simplifying your routine — sometimes to nothing at all — to enable your skin to stabilize its natural oil production, enhance the function of its protective barrier, and rejuvenate itself organically without interference from a barrage of products. It's about hitting the reset button and leaning into natural skincare approaches that trust your skin to maintain equilibrium.

Proponents of this method often cite the body’s inherent healing properties, suggesting that just as the gut may require a break to recover from digestive stresses, the skin can also use a respite from cosmetic inputs to restore itself to a state of natural, healthy balance.

Advantages of Skincare Fasting

Here are a few potential benefits of skincare fasting:

  1. Allows Skin to Breathe - Stripping back on product use can prevent the clogging of pores and give your skin the chance to breathe and regulate naturally.

  2. Calms Skin Irritation - By reducing exposure to potential irritants found in certain skincare products, fasting can help decrease inflammation and sensitivity.

  3. Encourages a Balanced Skin - It promotes the idea of 'less is more' which for some, may lead to balancing the skin's sebum production, reducing both dryness and oiliness.

  4. Enhances Product Efficiency - Taking a temporary break from your routine can make your skin more receptive to products when you reintroduce them later.

How Long Should Skincare Fast Last

At least a week to notice any changes. However, I would recommend doing it for a month, I did it for four months. Yes, four. Let me share my private story.  When my mother got sick, I stopped putting anything on my face. I admit that sometimes I didn't even take a shower. Sorry, that's how it was. Doctors gave my beloved mother 4 months to live and I no longer cared whether my face was moisturized or whether I applied sunblock. It was like this for several months. Honestly, nothing bad happened to my skin. I didn't grow in dirt, I haven't aged 10 years. Yes, my eyes were puffy from crying and dark circles from lack of sleep. However, my skin has cleared up and the excessive secretion of sebaceous glands has been reduced.  The conclusion was that the existing products dried my skin and therefore it produced too much sebum.  I lost my mother, she died of brain cancer and I promised myself that I would take more care of my health. I focused exclusively on organic products and limited my daily routine to 3-4 products. No longer 6-10 but up to 4.

Reintroducing Products Post-Fast

When you decide to reintroduce skincare products post-fast, do so gradually. Observe how your skin reacts to each product. This can help you determine which products are beneficial and which might be superfluous or even detrimental.

Just as your body occasionally needs a break from intense activities or heavy foods, your skin could benefit from a "spring break." Skincare fasting isn't about neglecting your skin — it's about mindfully allowing it to restore its innate strength.  Don't get me wrong, I love skincare, facials and all these feminine rituals but I also like to rest from time to time.

Give your skin a chance to reset naturally with skincare fasting and discover a potentially clearer, healthier, and more balanced complexion.
